He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin in 1995, graduating with first class honours. He trained in Dublin before undertaking research towards a Doctorate in Colorectal cancer genetics at the University of Hull, UK. He returned to Ireland for Specialist Registrar training in Galway, Cork and Dublin.

Colorectal cancer genetics and minimally invasive approaches to colorectal disease.
Fellowship training
Two fellowships in colorectal surgery, one in Perth, Western Australia and the other in Brisbane, Queensland, where he specialised in laparoscopic colorectal resection.
