Our highly-skilled pain medicine team cares for patients suffering chronic pain and cancer pain.

At Hermitage Clinic, we help bring ease to anyone living with pain from cancer. We also investigate cases of chronic pain and help treat those who are suffering.

Pain is an unpleasant physical condition that can cause intense distress. But pain is not only a physical issue. Dealing with pain can also affect how you think, how you feel and how you experience daily life.

Chronic pain

Chronic pain affects about one-quarter of the Irish population. It is an extremely debilitating condition and can affect many aspects of a person's life. Ongoing pain can have a significant impact on both physical and psychological wellbeing.

Our expert team supports those suffering from many different conditions that cause pain. This includes:

  • degenerative spinal disease
  • musculoskeletal disease
  • trauma-related pain
  • trigeminal and occipital neuralgia
  • chronic headaches
  • facial pain

At your first appointment, your consultant will assess you to investigate the source of your pain. They'll also assess how the pain is affecting areas of your life.

To help us investigate your pain, we may need to run a number of tests. Tests might include:

Our assessment will help us create a personalised treatment plan for you. This pain medicine plan will aim to reduce pain, optimise your mobility and support your psychological wellbeing.

Cancer pain

As cancer progresses, cancer patients can experience increasing pain. Pain can occur when cancer damages bodily tissues. Some cancer patients experience pain as a result of treatment they are receiving.

Our Pain medicine team provide a wraparound service for patients on a cancer care pathway at Hermitage Clinic.

We also accept referrals for patients who have received cancer care elsewhere.

Our goal is to reduce the pain caused by cancer or cancer treatment as much as possible.

Cancer pain can be experienced throughout the cancer journey and sometimes during treatment recovery.

Cancer pain therapy enables patients to be fully awake and interactive with family and friends for as long as possible. We can do this through a number of ways, including:

  • analgesic drug therapy (painkillers)
  • neurolytic treatment (nerve block therapy)
  • intrathecal drug delivery (via injection)
